Sperry Chalet Hike at Glacier National Park

*** Hiking Safely In Grizzly Country

This hike is one of the most challenging hikes at Glacier National Park. We set out early in the morning, parking right by the Sperry Chalet Trailhead on Going-to-the-Sun Road. The hike became pretty aggressive pretty quick. Neither of us consider ourselves to be in great shape, so we got winded early on. We persevered through and kept pushing and it ended up being incredibly rewarding.

We were told we wouldn't be able to get closed to the actual chalet, which burned down a couple of years ago. We saw a helicopter bringing large packages to the top of the hill, and we later realized that it was delivering construction materials because the chalet was being rebuilt. We saw less than ten people the entire hike and relatively minimal animal sign. There are dozens of beautiful outlooks and sig

hts along the way. Even though we were gassed by the time we got to the top, it was one of the most spectacular views we've ever seen.

When we reached the chalet, there was a smaller building next door that looked closed down, so we sat on the porch to eat our lunch. To our surprise a woman invited us inside. She worked there providing meals for the construction workers. It is so remote that they don't have internet or cell service. They have a satellite phone that the workers can call their families once a day, and that's all. They work in multi-week shifts and stay on site. We were able to purchase some coffee and soup (cash only) from her and it was a great place to warm up and refuel.

The hike back down was much easier (thankfully) but our legs were still insanely tired! Overall we loved this hike and we can't wait to go back and hopefully stay at the Sperry Chalet overnight one time.
